Stanford Wong Controlled Shooting

added 14.07.2011, 3:35AM

The dream of every craps player is to be a dice control expert who makes tons of money with the game. Unfortunately, dice control is only a fantasy to many players because it's so tough to pull off. After all, if you want to be successful at dice control, you need to put tons of practice into the matter, and be able to ride out the variance when things don't go your way. Dice control is considered so tough to do that many people don't even believe it really exists.

Such was the case when people doubted gambling expert Stanford Wong and his dice control skills. Now many gamblers recognize Wong as a blackjack guru, but few realize that he's also great at other games such as craps. Anyways, Wong took up the doubters on a bet, and he went to the casino to show off his controlled shooting skills.

To prove that dice control is a legitimate practice, Wong rolled the dice 278 times and the number seven turned up 45 times. The average player will throw a seven 46.3 times out of 278 rolls, which is slightly more than Wong ended up throwing. So does this prove that Wong is a dice control expert who can always beat the house edge?

Not quite because throwing one roll less than the average player over 278 rolls isn't going to prove anything major. After all, 278 rolls is a very small sample size, so the experiment didn't really prove a whole lot. However, it's interesting that Wong could come in under the average number of rolls under pressure. And by the way, he did win the bet, which is pretty cool.

So right about now, you should be rigging up a craps table in your basement and practicing hours of controlled shooting, right? Actually, you should only practice controlled shooting if you have the bankroll to handle such a task, and if you are prepared to spend 20 hours practicing each week for several months. Assuming you can handle this, it might be fun to give it a try and see how you do. But like they say, don't quit your day job.
