A Good Disguise Is Essential To Baccarat Success

added 06.11.2011, 10:09PM

Baccarat is thought of a rich person's game which may have been the case in the James Bond 'Goldfinger' era but is certainly not the case today.  With new developments in the gambling industry like 'mini baccarat' and 'online baccarat' the game has become very egalitarian with wagering options available at all price points.  For the casino player, however, the game remains a very primal battle of wits and dominance between player and dealer.  For that reason, the player needs to put every possible advantage in his favor and one of the most effective--if somewhat unconventional--is a good disguise.

In a much simpler time before the world was thrust into a never ending war on terror, the default choice for a serious baccarat player's disguse was self evident--by dressing in the manner of a 'sheik' or 'Arab petrolium oligarch' the erstwhile player could conceal his true identity while gaining a measure of mental and psychic domination over the 'house'.  At one point, no casino patron was treated with a greater combination of fear and respect than a sheik.  Unfortunately, this ruse is no longer a good option for obvious reasons--talking your way out of an ugly misunderstanding involving cocktail waitresses and escorts is one thing but extricating yourself from a snafu with the Department of Homeland Security another matter entirely.

Several other effective disguises for the baccarat player have also been rendered useless--the Texas cowboy and hip hop mogul personas have become a cliche and are as likely to provide a less intimidating edge than a 'Sponge Bob' t shirt and fanny pack.  Ditto the many conventions employed by professional poker players and those who aspire to be one.  The always classic 'Lucha Libre mask and a dark suit' favored by El Santo in the classic Mexican wrestling films is no longer an option due to a practical matter--most casinos and some cities will no longer let you wear a mask in public.

A couple of classic disguises are still effective today--at the top of the list is the priest's robe and nun's habit.  At one point the presence of a priest in a gambling casino would create suspicion, but with the countless scandals facing men of the cloth and the liberalization of the Catholic Church a priest that plays craps or baccarat is the worst of their problems.  The nun's habit is a good disguise for women and slightly built men--the idea is to play it off like you're a wacky, Sound of Music type nun and not a scolding Mother Superior type.

Disguises of this sort aren't necessary for online casino baccarat, but can be very effective in the casino setting.
